5 Centimeters Per Second At San Diego Asian Film Festival!

October 12th, 2007
cursedfrogurt

Holy moly. The word “powerful” or “inspirational” gets thrown about on films like rice at a wedding. However, when those flowery words are thrown upon Makoto Shinkai, it’s clear that such adjectives are merely scratching the surface.

Shinkai is quite possibly one of the few remaining visionaries in anime, allowing him to stand proud with the likes of Hayao Miyazaki, Hideaki Anno and possibly Ryutaro Nakamura. Shinkai is the rare breed of anime director that doesn’t dwell on the cliches of the medium. Sure, his debut film “Voices of a Distant Star” featured giant robots, copious violence and grand space battles, but that would be like saying that “M*A*S*H” was just another war movie.
