REVIEW: Professor Layton And The Curious VillageFebruary 20th, 2008Jason Glick |
To be honest, I only skimmed a handful of previews before picking up this one. The information that I “gleaned” from them led me to believe that this was a quirky adventure game with an appealing art style. Once I actually put the game into my DS and started playing, I found out that it wasn’t quite exactly what I was expecting…

Review: No More HeroesJanuary 29th, 2008Jason Glick |
It’s very tempting to compare “No More Heroes,” the latest exercise in playable madness from director Suda 51 and Grasshopper Manufacture, to their last major original title “Killer 7.” Aside from sharing the same director, they were both developed for Nintendo systems (though “Killer 7″ got a reportedly sloppy PS2 port), and feature some of the most out-there storytelling you’ll see in any medium. “Killer 7″ had a team of seven assassins that were really the split personalities of one man fighting a group of invisible terrorist monsters. “No More Heroes” puts you in the shoes of Travis Touchdown, an anime and wrestling otaku who buys a lightsaber beam katana in an online auction and decides to start killing his way up the ranks of the world’s best assassins in order to score with a hot French chick.

REVIEW: Mass EffectNovember 25th, 2007Jason Glick |
Which developer made the best games on the original Xbox? For me, that’s a question with an easy answer. BioWare. The two games they made for that system,”Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” and “Jade Empire,” represent some of (if not “the”) best storytelling, writing, and voice acting of the last console generation. If you’re looking for pure action, then the “Halo” games have it beat; but, if you’re like me and you prize storytelling over action, then these games were as good as it got. So when their first Xbox 360 project was announced as “Mass Effect,” I knew that this would be a game worth getting. After playing it, I can say that it is.

Coming Soon To Virtual Console…October 2nd, 2007Jason Glick |
In case you haven’t heard, Turbo Grafx-16 CD games will finally start coming to the Virtual Console later this month. The first two games are, perhaps unsurprisingly, shooters: the Air Zonk sequel/remake Super Air Zonk: Rockabilly Paradise, and the old Super CD system pack-in game, Gate of Thunder. I can vouch for the quality of GoT but I’ve never played Rockabilly Paradise, so I’ll probably be downloading it the week it comes out to see how it is. I’m also willing to bet that this news has probably inspired most of the people who visit this site to go, “Whatever.” But hear me out!

Yakuza 2 Coming Stateside!September 20th, 2007Jason Glick |
The original “Yakuza” was one of last year’s hidden gems. While it was a standard beat-’em-up at heart, it turned out to be far more sophisticated and engrossing in its execution. As newly sprung from jail Yakuza Kazuma Kiryuu, you had to find out who set you up all those years ago and what became of your friends in a melodramatic, but still highly entertaing story played out in a meticulously re-created Japanese city.

REVIEW: Metroid Prime 3 CorruptionSeptember 9th, 2007Jason Glick |
Believe it or not, I was all ready to camp out for a Wii when it launched last year. I was prepared to line up at 4AM outside my local Target to do so until a few weeks prior, when news broke that I didn’t have to. The news was that “Metroid Prime 3: Corruption” had been delayed from the launch to sometime in 2007. So I was spared from getting up at some ungodly hour to line up for a system I might not even be able to buy. Flash forward ten months, and not only did I manage to get my hands on a Wii, “Metroid Prime 3” finally shipped.
Was the wait worth it? You’re goddamn right it was.

Preview: .hack//G.U. vol. 3: RedemptionSeptember 3rd, 2007Jason Glick |
The last few weeks have been surprisingly busy for game releases, with “Bioshock,” “Blue Dragon,” and (the one I’m playing now) “Metroid Prime 3:Corruption” hitting within two weeks of each other. We’ve also got “Stanglehold,” “Heavenly Sword,” and “Lair” coming out in a few weeks, and the mother of them all, “Halo 3” hitting at the end of the month. Amidst all this, is the conclusion of another game series as “.hack//G.U.” reaches its completion with vol. 3, “Redemption,” next week.

REVIEW: GrimGrimoireJuly 16th, 2007Jason Glick |
If anyone cares, let me just say that I’m sorry this took so long. Lots of business with starting a new job, cons, friends and other stuff really took away from time that should’ve been spent looking at this. That being said, the clever observer would probably note that “GrimGrimoire” couldn’t have been all that great if it didn’t get me to devote all my spare time to it. They’d be correct, but the game’s not all bad. It just goes to show that no matter how engaging a story and characters you have, and no matter how you try to streamline and tweak the interface, real-time-strategy games just don’t work as well as they do on consoles as they do on PCs.

REVIEW: Hoshigami DSJune 28th, 2007Jason Glick |
Shouldn’t there be more of these out there?
By “these” I mean Japanese turn based strategy games for the DS. With the system having all but consumed the market in Japan and still burning up the charts over here, you’d think that we’d have seen more of these kinds of games on our shores. I could be wrong, but “Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth Remix” is probably the first of its kind to make it to this system in the States. That’s definitely good for the game itself, since it’ll be judged a bit more forgivingly by its target audience. While I can’t say that the game needs every bit of help it’ll get, it’ll certainly tide people over well enough until something better comes along.

REVIEW: Atelier Iris 3 — Grand PhantasmMay 29th, 2007Jason Glick |
Let me level with you, this wasn’t a game that I requested to review. The way I wound up with it mainly went like, “Atelier Iris 3, it’s a sequel to a fantasy RPG series I’ve never played before, huh? Well, I’m not looking at anything else at the moment, so go and send it my way. It can’t be that bad.” Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? Well much to my surprise, I wound up enjoying this game a lot more than I expected to. The turn based battle system and alchemic item creation system have a lot of depth to them, making them really fun to use. Unfortunately the story, and game world aren’t nearly as deep.

REVIEW: Odin SphereMay 22nd, 2007Jason Glick |
I have to admit, I was really looking forward to tackling this one. The advance buzz indicated that it would probably be the sleeper hit of the summer thanks to its fantastic graphics and intense 2D action. Now, after having sunk many hours of my life into it I can say that the buzz wasn’t quite all that. The game is undeniably beautiful, and the 2D action is intense, but the gameplay isn’t varied enough to avoid repetition if you’re hell-bent on playing through all the game has to offer. I’m not saying you shouldn’t buy the game, as I did have a lot of fun with it, but don’t go in expecting “TEH GREATEST CULT HIT EVAR!!1!”

Odin Sphere Impressions!May 16th, 2007Jason Glick |

As is the case every summer, when the temperature outside starts rising the flow of quality game releases starts drying up. Unless you really like playing games based on the latest summer movie blockbuster, then expect to wait until August before the quality starts ticking up again. It doesn’t mean that there won’t be any good games released this summer, you’ll just have to look a little harder to find them. That’s what “Odin Sphere” is counting on.

Final Fantasy IV DS Website Is Live!May 14th, 2007Jason Glick |
After the success of the Final Fantasy III DS re-make released last year, Square Enix is looking to re-make more of the classic series for the massively popular handheld. As part of the 20th Anniversary of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy IV is going to be the next game to get that treatment. Not much about it is known, aside from the fact that it’ll be using the same engine as FFIII DS. If you can read Japanese, you can check out the Japanese website by clicking this link.

Naruto Nation Storms Bookstores In September!May 2nd, 2007Jason Glick |
How do you capitalize on the success of the most popular manga in America? By releasing even more of it in the final quarter of this year. For those of you who haven’t heard, Viz will be releasing twelve volumes of “Naruto” between September and December of this year, along with a host of supplement and art books. The volumes in question will be 16-27, which will take the American release right up to the beginning of the “Shippuden” arc.

REVIEW: Puzzle QuestApril 26th, 2007Jason Glick |

After hearing how the Penny Arcade guys freaked out over this, I figured it was worth a look. So I spent most of Sunday driving around my town to find a Gamestop that had a copy in stock, and played it for a few hours straight, getting a massive headache in the process. This was after playing it for several hours, of course.
