The first features to point out are the guitar models Red Octane has chosen for their controllers. Gibson’s Les Paul series gets the honor of guitar model for the 360, PS3, and Wii consoles however the PS2 will be modeled after Gibson’s Kramer lineup. Aside from the shape, the fret buttons now have their colors outlined around the buttons. All versions except for the Wii will require two AA batteries to power, as each of the guitars will be wireless as well. One handy-dandy new feature is the neck or fretboard of the guitar is now detachable, saving you a bit more room when packing it up for your next jam session. The latch on the back securely snaps on and off so you don’t need to worry about it accidently falling off between an intense solo or storming strum-a-thon. And to those who want to add a bit more personalization to their “Axe of Rock-ageddon,” the faceplates which encompass the strumming bar will be detachable also, giving you the ability to buy and change faceplates in the future. Now onto the specifics:
- Wii: Right off the bat you’ll see a compartment for the Wii Remote which is accessed by opening a hatch from the back and attaching the remote to a plug. It fits quite snugly with the additional padding inside, there’s even a little space to put the remote’s strap in. Players will be relived to know that the remote looks to be deep enough inside its own compartment that any of the remote’s buttons will not be sticking out above the body, getting in the way. Considering that the remote adds a bit more weight to the guitar, the weight comparison between the other consoles is minor as demonstrated by MTV’s Review Segment. The guitar will function wirelessly plus having the tilt sensor built inside the remote is a given. So far, the Wii guitar is confirmed to have rumble feedback and does not require batteries in it compared to the other consoles.
- PS3: The PS3 version will also be played wirelessly however it is connected via USB RF dongles so technically, it isn’t entirely wireless. Unfortunately, this guitar only supports GHIII and will not be compatible with GHII.
- 360: In comparison to the previous model the X-plorer, the miscellaneous Xbox buttons are now adequately placed in a better, non-obstructing area. It addition to being compatible with GHII, according to Red Octane, the 360 headsets will also work in conjunction with the new guitar as stated in Teamxbox’s review.
- PS2: Aside from being a different body than the rest, this Kramer model with a black finish will also be wireless.
Now that we know what each guitar is capable of, there’s still personal testing to be done. Stay tuned shred-heads, more updates coming as we get them!
